The mineral rich waters of the Strafford river brough native Americans to Stafford Spring, Connecticut hundreds of years ago. Today, the Stafford Motor Speedway attracts hundreds of people each year to their annual spring Swap & Meet which is held at the raceway.
Colonial Town of Stafford began almost 300 years ago as a rural agricultural community. The easy availability of water power from the tributaries of the Willimantic River led to industrialization, and this abundance of power helped generate local population growth. By the mid-1800s, Stafford was connected by railroad to markets across New England, and before the State Highway projects of the 1920s and 1930s, the town had a trolley connection to Rockville, CT. In the times of the civil war, Stafford was known to make cannonballs and other war supplies for the northern forces. This building can be located in Staffordville, west of the center of town.
Stafford, Connecticut today is growing, vibrant town that also attracts visitors and campers. The nationally known Stafford Motor Speedway attract racing fans internationally every spring and summer. Races at Stafford Motor Speedway are held evenings. The town offers a modern hospital. Built in 1975, the Johnson Memorial Hospital is located on Route 190 in Stafford and has an adjoining medical professional building.
Stafford has a long history of active civic organizations. The Lion’s Club, Rotary Club, Stafford Fish and Game Club, Italian Benefit Society, the Stafford Junior Women’s Club, VFW, American Legion, Rod and Gun Club, Grange, and Masons all have local chapters in Stafford. A recent addition to the quality of life in Stafford is the new Stafford Public Librarry. The Library offers public service programs and special events in fantastic new facility.
