Lyme was settled by Europeans in 1664. The Eight Mile River valley area was purchased from a native American named Chapeto in 1669. Later, the Joshuatown area was purchased from a native American named Josuah, who was the third son of the Indian Sachem Uncas. Lyme now has two very small commercial centers, Hamburg Cove and Hadlyme. Lyme is the home to Gillette’s Castle, the Hamburg Fair, and its own Fourth of July parade.
