Golden Lamb Buttery – CT Dining

Mystic County CT – Brooklyn CT Restaurant Guide

There are dozens of first quality restaurateurs in Connecticut and many excellent chef-owned restaurants but none are quite like the Golden Lamb Buttery. An odd name for a restaurant maybe,  but a wonderful experience that you will not soon forget. When you discover another great Connecticut restaurant, let us know about it. The Golden Lamb Buttery

On a rainy Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn Connecticut we walked into this big barn filled with 49 years of historic memorabilia and also into one of the most unique and delightful lunch experiences I have had in many years.

We had arrived at The Golden Lamb Buttery – a Brooklyn, Connecticut restaurant located off the beaten path on a hillside in the area known as the quiet corner of the state. I had heard of The Golden Lamb Buttery, the reputation alone had sparked a lot of interest from my fellow diners.

As we explored the barn and being our first time there, we half expected to be dining in what we now know as the entree area. Newspaper articles, magazine covers, and awards lined the walls. We were told stories of how famous people were often seen here.  One story was that Paul Newman would land his helicopter in the field and drop in for dinner. It is just that type of place.

We were then greeted by Katie, the granddaughter of the original owner who is now the hostess and proprietor.  She escorted us into the restaurant through a tiny kitchen, filled with amazing aromas, where their meal is being prepared, we were then brought to one of three unique and separate dining rooms.  She apologizes for the rain which kept us from dining outdoors on the large deck overlooking the pastures separated by wonderful old stone walls and grazing cattle.  We were seated at a table in the bow windows that allowed us to enjoy the view without getting soggy.

Lunch is an affair at the Golden Lamb Buttery. Each meal is prepared to order, you will not be rushed. The wine selection is quite extensive, two or three soup choices and the lunch menu has 7 to 9 featured items which change daily. We started with a cheddar cauliflower soup, very good.  The seafood chowder (see photos) was equally delicious and bountiful. The chowder had a clear broth and was heavily laden with seafood. The Hillandale Hash, a Lamber Buttery favorite is a must for all hash lovers. Pan-seared Sea Scallops and Duck Ragu with Herb Potato Gnocchi completed our choices. All were delightful and very good. The outstanding mention at our table was the Duck with the Potato Gnocchi.

Dessert choices Lemon Blueberry Cake with buttercream frosting, Strawberry Rhubarb Bread Pudding, and Chocolate Pecan Tart. Again all were homemade and wonderful but the stand out was the Lemon Blueberry Cake.

Our lunch lasted over two hours and was a charming way to spend a dreary Saturday afternoon.  I am sure a visit to Golden Lamb Buttery is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon when they are serving.  Lunch is served Tuesday thru Saturday.

Dinner is served Friday and Saturday nights only. Dinner is a prix-fixe price and men are requested to wear jackets and ties. Reservations are a must for both lunch and dinner.

I recommend the Golden Lamb Buttery for a great dining experience. I can imagine a real barn wedding here as well as many well dressed people on a weekend night for dinner. A hayride along with dinner – a wonderful idea. Visit their website to find out more.
