Mystic, Connecticut is a village along the Mystic River in New London County. With no independent government of its own, Mystic is only recognized as a municipality within the state, located in the town of Groton and Stonington. Mystic began as a thriving shipbuilding community during the clipper ship era. Today, Mystic is full of culture, history and activities, reeling in a great number of tourists each year.
Mystic is home of the world's largest maritime museum, which has preserved both a number of sailing ships, most notably the whaler Charles W. Morgan, and the seaport buildings ashore. The Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration, most notable for its research department and work with marine life rehabilitation, is a popular stop for many, especially to see the beluga whales. Exhibits of Dr. Robert Ballard, discoverer of the Titanic, are also on display at the Aquarium.
The bascule bridge marks the business district, filled with many shops and restaurants. The most famous restaurant being Mystic Pizza, which inspired the name of a 1988 film. The town of Mystic was used during the shooting of the film, Mystic Pizza, but the restaurant was not used. Various scenes from the movie Amistad were also shot at the Mystic Seaport. Even though Mystic has had its Hollywood debut, the laid-back New England feel remains though the town.
