Located in eastern Connecticut, Griswold was founded in 1815. Originally set out in the North Society of Preston, Griswold petitioned the state of Connecticut to be incorporated in May of 1815. In a proclamation set forth by the Connecticut State Assembly, October 1815, Griswold officially became a town.
Although border disputes continued between Griswold, Preston, and Voluntown, it wasn't until 1872 before the final boundaries of Griswold were officially recognized.
