Canton was first settled in 1737 and was incorporated as a town in 1806. The Town developed from four distinct villages which remain today. Canton Center, Canton, Collinsville (originally named South Canton) and North Canton all retain many of their original historic structures. Canton Center and Collinsville each contain National Register Historic Districts filled with Colonial and Victorian homes.
